What are the best workouts for muscle gain?
When it comes to building muscle from scratch, the three core categories of exercises to learn are:
-
Compound lifts (exercises that use multiple joints and large muscle groups at once)
-
Isolation work (exercises that target one main muscle or small muscle group)
-
Bodyweight (exercises that use your own body as resistance)
Combining exercises from these three main categories gives you the best chance at building muscle, and rotating between the three also ensures that you keep your workout routine interesting and recovery-friendly.

Ready to start building muscle? Our ApexVita personal trainers have created a beginner-friendly muscle-building program to help you get started on the right foot. For beginners, we recommend starting with a balanced full-body workout program, where you can add or switch exercises in the weeks following once you become more comfortable.

Keeping consistent is key when building muscle so it's important that you commit to your program each week, starting with three sessions per week (have rest days in between). While you might not see immediate muscle gain, you're sure to feel yourself become stronger. To make sure you're progressing, here's what you should focus on week-on-week:
Week 1: Learn the movements
Week 1 is all about giving your body time to build a movement library. This is especially the case for those who are new to muscle-building and aren't familiar with moving their body in such specific ways. Correct form is most important (you don't want to injure yourself) so make sure to have a personal trainer to correct your movements or watch demonstration videos to get a visual example of how you should move.
When picking weights for your exercises, make sure that you pick a light weight that feels almost 'too easy'. Remember, you'll be doing multiple reps and sets so you pick a weight that you can lift sustainably. Make sure to log your weight (dumbbells) as well so you can track progress later on.
Week 2 - Week 3: Add volume
As you get familiar with these exercises, it's time to start adding volume. For Week 2, we recommend adding more reps and slightly decreasing your rest time (e.g. from two minutes to a minute and a half). Keep your weights as they are and still focus on perfecting your form - they should almost become muscle-memory at this point.
Come Week 3, we recommend pushing even further by adding heavier weights. For example, if you were using 5kg dumbbells for your chest presses, now feel out using 7kg dumbbells. Don't increase your weights too much and make sure you're still able to perform the increased amount of reps from Week 2. Your workout should feel tiring but not painful or exhausting. Remember, consistency is always key!
Week 4: Deload and reflect
Now that you've gotten to the end of your workout cycle, it's time to recover and reflect. Week 4 is not a rest week, but it is a time for your joints, tendons, and central nervous system to recover from their continual movement over the last three weeks. We recommend dropping your weight load by around 20% and using these lighter weights to focus on perfect form and technique.
This week is meant to feel refreshing while also helping you reflect on your month of muscle-building so far. It'll be extra rewarding to see how easily you can perform exercises and lift weights heavier than when you started.
Tip: Bear in mind that this is a general program and may not be suitable for those with specific physical injuries. Consult a personal trainer to have your program personalised to your strength goals and body.
